Bee conservation

Bees

bee conservationHelp Mayfield to save the bees
In the UK, it is estimated that 70 crops are dependent on, or benefit from, bees. The economic value of honey bees and bumble bees as pollinators of commercially grown insect-pollinated crops in the UK is estimated at £440 million per year, which the bees do for absolutely free. For humans to do the work of a bee would seem impossible but may soon be a realization if we do not  act soon, as help save the bumble beemany people don't realise the vital role bees play in maintaining a balanced eco-system. "If the bees disappeared off the surface of the globe then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man," said Albert Einstein. Just stop and think about that for a moment……

save the beesIn the past 70 years two species have become nationally extinct, and others are seriously threatened. Its not only in the UK bees are declining but the world over but why? Scientists have found evidence of almost all known bee viruses in bees taken from hives around the world recently. Some had five or six infections at the same time and were infested with fungi -- a sign, experts say, "that the insects' immune system may have collapsed." The Reason; loss of wild habitats, intensive farming and overuse of pesticides and herbicides.

How Can We Help?
Urgently improving their habitats by helping us to raise funds by sponsoring our ‘off road’ coast to coast cycle in May. The ride will start in the aptly named town of St Bees, finishing at Robin Hood’s Bay. The route will cover 210 miles of the toughest mountain bike terrain to be found anywhere in the UK incorporating Black Sail Pass, Garburn Pass, the Pennine Way, Swaledale & the superbly named Fryupdale all in 5 days.
